From 15th to 22nd September, DYPALL Network took part in the 23rd University of Youth and Development (UYD) with the “Educate for Democracy” training course. This international youth event was held at the Centro Eurolatinoamericano de Juventud (CEULAJ) in Mollina, Spain, and brought together over 150 young people, institutional representatives, and experts from Europe, the southern Mediterranean, and sub-Saharan Africa.

The “Educate for Democracy” training course was designed to empower youth workers and leaders from both EU and non-EU countries to effectively replicate the “Educate for Democracy” training programme in their local communities and to help create a broader international network of trainers and peer educators focused on citizenship. Throughout the week, 20 participants explored the programme in-depth, adapting its activities to fit their local contexts. Through workshops, group discussions, and practical exercises, they enhanced their understanding of how to engage young people with the concepts, ideas, and values of democracy, active citizenship, and critical thinking using non-formal education methods.

In parallel to the training course, DYPALL Network Steering Group met during the first two days. The members focused on reviewing the network’s progress, enhancing website features, and discussing strategies for membership outreach and partnerships. A plan was made to establish a working group to develop a comprehensive outreach strategy and identify potential new partners. There were also discussions about expanding partnerships, particularly with research institutes and extending the network’s geographical reach across more European countries. The Steering Group also explored key programme areas, such as the development of youth councils, support for student councils, and identifying structures that promote democratic innovation.

The UYD is an international youth event organized by the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe to promote collaboration and learning between young people and experts. The 2024 edition focused on the theme “#ForTheCulture of Human Rights and Rule of Lawand provided participants with opportunities to exchange ideas and network. The training course was organized by DYPALL Network in collaboration with Novisi Elkartea, with support from the Erasmus+ programme through the Spanish National Agency. UYD 2024 is part of the iLEGEND III Joint Programme, co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe.
