DYPALL Network, along with the European Parliament Liaison Office in Lisbon, brought together key stakeholders on July 10th to discuss implemented strategies for boosting youth participation in the 2024 EU elections. Representatives from the European Commission, IPDJ/CJL, ESN Portugal, Movijovem, Europe Direct Algarve (online), and CNJ (online) participated in this stakeholders meeting.

The meeting started with an introduction to the “EmpowerEU: Educate for Democracy” project, funded by the European Commission’s CERV program. This project aims to spark meaningful discussions among young people about the EU’s impact on their lives, raise awareness of EU policies, and encourage active participation in shaping Europe’s future.

Data analysis of past campaigns was discussed, emphasizing the importance of measuring the effectiveness of outreach efforts. A critical outcome was the development of an action plan for continued collaboration, prioritizing strategies to keep young people engaged beyond just voting in EE 24. This plan includes offering ongoing support and opportunities for involvement in European affairs.

Partners also explored ways to connect participation in European elections with a deeper understanding of European values and institutions, fostering a more informed and invested young Europeans. The meeting highlighted the success of peer-to-peer education projects that target first-time voters and disengaged youth through diverse formats, showcasing extensive collaboration among public bodies, NGOs, informal groups, and regional networks. However, challenges such as limited coordination and few opportunities for stakeholders to exchange practices were identified.

Next steps and commitments include partners sharing tools used during campaigns and organizing the EmpowerEU Academy in September 2024, which will involve young participants from diverse regions of Portugal.
