From 28th to 30th April 2026, Arad, Romania, hosted a dynamic Training Course for Youth Workers, for the PLAYCRACY \u2013 Game-based approaches for strengthening youth participation in democracy<\/em> projeto. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bringing together youth leaders, youth workers and teachers from Romania, Greece and Portugal, the training created a collaborative space to reflect on how democracy is experienced and practised by young people across different national contexts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the course of three days, participants engaged in open and honest discussions about the realities of youth participation in their respective countries. While differences in context were evident, common challenges quickly emerged \u2014 from disengagement and lack of trust in institutions to limited access to meaningful participation opportunities. At the same time, the group identified important strengths, including grassroots initiatives, youth-led movements, and innovative educational approaches already making a difference. A central focus of the training was the role of gamification in civic education. Rather than approaching democracy as an abstract or overly formal concept, PLAYCRACY explores how learning can become more accessible, engaging and relatable through play. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What if understanding democratic processes felt less like attending a lecture and more like taking part in a game?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This guiding question shaped much of the experience. Participants had the opportunity to test a range of games designed to foster civic engagement, critical thinking and collaboration. In particular, two game prototypes developed by the Romanian team were explored in depth. These sessions were not only about playing, but also about analysing mechanics, giving feedback and considering how the games could be adapted and refined for inclusion in the final PLAYCRACY toolkit. Creativity was not limited to testing existing ideas. Drawing on their own professional experience and the realities of their local contexts, participants also worked in groups to design new activities. These contributions will help ensure that the final toolkit reflects diverse perspectives and remains practical and relevant for those working directly with young people. Beyond the training room, the programme also included opportunities for exchange and inspiration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The group visited the Europe Direct centre in Arad, where they engaged with the technical team in a discussion on the challenges of working with young people and shared good practices from their respective countries. A visit to Timi\u0219oara further enriched the experience, offering participants a broader cultural and historical perspective on Romania, often associated with its democratic evolution. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The training course was organised by Asociatia Centrul Roman De Politici Europene and Asociatia Share Education<\/strong> (\u00cemp\u0103rt\u0103\u0219im Educa\u021bie, Romania), in partnership with Est\u00fadio Design Regras Dracon<\/strong> (Gr\u00e9cia) e Rede DYPALL<\/strong> (Portugal). By the end of the training, participants were equipped with the knowledge and confidence to use and contribute to the PLAYCRACY toolkit \u2014 a collection of games and interactive activities aimed at promoting youth participation in democratic processes. By combining creativity with active citizenship, PLAYCRACY continues to transform play into meaningful participation and ideas into concrete action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
